The WinkBed hybrid mattress with a quilted Euro-top surface

WinkBed Firmness Guide: Softer vs. Luxury Firm vs. Firmer vs. Plus

Choosing a WinkBed is not finished when you choose the brand. Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus serve different comfort preferences and support needs. The most useful starting point is to decide whether you need more cushioning, less sinkage, or a design intended for higher body weights.

All four versions of The WinkBed are available to compare in our Colonial Heights showroom. If you are unsure, start on Luxury Firm, then move in the direction that answers a specific concern. That is a comparison method, not a recommendation that everyone buy Luxury Firm.

The four WinkBed choices

Version Why try it? What would make you reconsider?
Softer You want more cushioning, particularly at the shoulder and hip You feel more sinkage or resistance to movement than you prefer
Luxury Firm You want a middle reference for cushion and support Your pressure points need more give, or you prefer a firmer surface
Firmer You want less give and a more resistant surface Your shoulder or hip cannot settle comfortably
Plus You want to assess the model designed for heavier sleepers The specialized design does not match your cushioning needs

WinkBeds currently uses both Soft/Firm and Softer/Firmer wording in its materials. Here we use the names shown in our store. Manufacturer firmness numbers are orientation aids; they are not measurements of what every person feels.

Softer: when cushioning is the missing piece

Softer is worth comparing when the other versions leave your shoulder or hip uncomfortable. It is particularly relevant for side sleepers who need more room for those pressure points to settle.

Check the rest of the body at the same time. Your waist and pelvis should feel comfortably held rather than unsupported. Roll onto your back and return to your side. If the added give feels pleasant but turning becomes harder than you want, you have found a tradeoff to weigh rather than an automatic upgrade.

Lighter sleepers may find Softer useful, but body weight alone does not determine the answer. A lighter person can prefer firmness, and a heavier person can need considerable cushioning.

Luxury Firm: a reference, not a universal answer

Luxury Firm is a practical first test when you do not know your preference. Use it to identify what you want changed: more shoulder relief, less pelvic sinkage, or a different response when moving.

If you relax comfortably in your usual position, stop looking for a reason to move up or sideways. If you cannot, compare the appropriate alternative. Read our Luxury Firm review for a fuller discussion of that specific version.

Firmer: when you prefer less give

Firmer is relevant when Luxury Firm feels too yielding. Back and stomach sleepers who prefer a more resistant surface should include it, while still checking comfort rather than equating firmness with correct support.

Side sleepers who like a firm bed can compare it too. Pay particular attention to shoulder compression and whether you can remain still comfortably. If you keep shifting away from a pressure point, that is useful evidence against the current fit.

Do not choose Firmer merely to make the purchase feel more durable. Firmness is a sensation; durability depends on materials, design, use, and the support system underneath.

Plus: a different support need, not just another firmness step

WinkBeds designs Plus around sleepers weighing about 250 pounds and above. Its construction is intended for higher body weights. That target audience is not a maximum capacity, and it does not mean that every person above that weight prefers the same feel.

Include Plus when comparing support at a higher body weight, then assess shoulder cushioning, ease of movement, and how your partner experiences it. A lighter partner may perceive the same mattress quite differently.

Our WinkBed Plus and heavier-sleeper guide goes deeper into this decision. Check the requirements and limits of your frame or adjustable base separately from mattress firmness.

Which WinkBed should a side, back or stomach sleeper try?

Sleep pattern Useful test sequence
Side Luxury Firm, then Softer if pressure persists; Firmer if you prefer more resistance
Back Luxury Firm, then adjust toward the cushioning or firmness you prefer
Stomach Compare midsection support on Luxury Firm and Firmer carefully
Combination Test every position you use and the effort required to turn
Higher body weight Include Plus alongside the alternative that best matches your comfort preference

These are starting sequences. They are not medical recommendations or guarantees. Do not choose a mattress to treat persistent pain without appropriate professional guidance.

Couples should compare together

Use the same mattress at the same time. Discuss shoulder comfort, midsection support, movement, and the amount of usable space near the edge. Avoid reducing the decision to which partner likes the surface softer.

If one person needs much more cushioning and the other strongly prefers firmness, ask about size and configuration options. Do not assume a single shared firmness is the only possible setup, or that a split setup is necessary before you have compared carefully.

A repeatable showroom process

  1. Bring the size, sleeping positions, and problems with your current mattress.
  2. Start on Luxury Firm with a suitable pillow.
  3. Choose the next version based on the one thing you want changed.
  4. Spend several minutes in your actual sleeping position.
  5. Test rolling, lying near the edge, and getting out.
  6. Return to your first choice to confirm the difference.

We also display Blue Collection B2. It is a separate construction, not a fifth firmness of the same standard WinkBed. Read the B2 review if you want to explore that alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Is Softer less supportive?

A softer surface and inadequate support are not the same thing. Evaluate pressure relief and comfortable positioning together.

Is Plus simply the firmest WinkBed?

Its important distinction is the intended higher-weight audience and construction, not just a position on a firmness scale.

Can I compare all four locally?

Yes. Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus are all currently on our showroom floor.
